A Dragon is Born
Deep into the cold depths of space there once existed a planet. Cold, desolate, with no signs of life, this planet had existed for millennia. And for the first time in its long life, something was happening. Weather started to drastically change; cycling between extreme cold, and extreme heat; this planet became unstable. Gravity increased, and the stars moved ever closer. Until one day, there was a crack. And then more arrived. A soft growl could be heard through the galaxy. And then…an explosion. A blast so fierce, it threw the cosmic balance into chaos. Stars were consumed, nearby planets destroyed. And in the middle of the shattered space…were two bright eyes. A baby dragon had been born.
Alone and unsure, she looked around her surroundings, taking in the disaster left behind by her birth. What would she do now? Well, the obvious answer; eat. Endlessly she flew through time and space and countless galaxies. The more she ate, the more her powers grew, and soon she could create her own planets, though creating life on those planets was a different matter. She spent numerous eons trying to harness her powers, desperately willing a life form to share in her travels. For as powerful as she was, she was alone. And loneliness plagues even the most powerful of beings.
After an innumerable amount of time, she gave up. Loneliness turned to bitterness. Wonder turned to anger. What was the point of being so powerful if there was no one to share in this power? Any planets she found that had life forms didn’t give her any pleasure or entertainment. In the blink of an eye the slight curiosity was gone. And once again she would move on to the next galaxy.
A Dragon and Companionship
Surrounded by her own negativity, she almost missed it. A planet brimming with life.
Circling back, she was attracted by billions of lights. Shrouding herself in her magic she descended to this planet and observed. And what she saw was Life. Humans, animals, demi-humans, creatures she couldn’t even identify, roamed around and lived their lives in coexistence. Oceans, trees, and nature were abundant. And things she’d never seen or heard before assaulted her senses.
For once, she had felt the familiar burn of excitement in her chest. She wanted to see more, feel more, do more. So she forced herself to fit in. Adopting a more human appearance (though she couldn’t transform completely), she walked among the people. Discovered she liked things like music, art, and video games. And while the food on this planet may not boost her powers, it was indeed very satisfying to her nonetheless. And for a while, things were good. She was happy and had made friends. But Dragons weren’t meant to be contained to a small human vessel.
A Descent into Darkness
It began slowly. A desire for more. A little more chaos, a little more disruption, a little more control. Humanity’s darker moments began to weigh on her mind. She began to tire of the insincerity and duplicitous people. Why not remove them? The thought crept into her mind. It would be easy. One flick of her wrist and they’d be gone. Surely humanity could only benefit from that?
She fought it initially. Rationalized those dark thoughts away. But it began to get harder and harder. The very essence of her power, the Core of her being, was becoming harder to control. Her powers began to leak out, cracking her skin, changing her into something more draconic, more dangerous. Nails had become claws, scales had broken through her skin, a tail now ever present; she no longer could hide among the people. A familiar ache had replaced the once happy burn of excitement; Hunger. She wanted everything this planet had to offer, to consume it and make it hers.
But some small part of her resisted. That more human part wanted to give humanity a final chance to escape its annihilation. At war with herself, her magic swirled with uncertainty, until she could no longer contain it. Her very being, pure cosmic energy, burst forth, and she had lost herself. Skin replaced with the void of the galaxy, there was no sign of the dragon before. She had become the void.
